Michael Tarnat was a roving left sided full back, equally capable of playing on the left of midfield.
At Karlsruher he had finished runner up in the German Cup and experienced UEFA Cup football in a squad containing the likes of Thomas Hassler, Thorsten Fink and Sean Dundee. Tarnat made the first of 19 appearances for his country with in a 5-1 victory over Armenia in October 1996.
Tarnat and Fink both moved to Bayern Munich the following year and the former would go on to win four league titles, three German cups and four German league cups in a six year spell. He would also win the biggest club competition in European Football.
Putting aside memories of the stoppage time loss to Manchester United in 1999, Bayern returned to the European Cup final two years later for a showdown with Valencia. The match started poorly for Bayern, as Patrick Andersson was adjudged to have handled in the box, and Gaizka Mendieta scored a second minute penalty. Moments later Bayern were given a chance to equalise when Stefan Effenberg was tripped, but Mehmet Scholl’s penalty was saved by Santiago Canizares.
Bayern were awarded a second penalty when Amedeo Carboni handled, and Effenberg dispatched the resulting spot kick. After extra time there was still no separating the sides, and so a shoot out was required. Bayern held their nerve and were victorious 5-4.
Tarnat had an accomplished international career, playing in each of Germany’s games at the 1998 World Cup. He left Bayern for Manchester City in 2003 and was virtually ever present, before returning to Germany with Hannover.
He retired from playing in 2009 and is now a scout for Bayern Munich.
