Robert Prosinecki was a much travelled playmaker who lined up for both Real Madrid and Barcelona, in a career that took him to 12 clubs in an 18 year career.
After making his debut for Dinamo Zagreb, Prosinecki was told that he would not make it as a professional player and was released to Red Star Belgrade. At Red Star he would quickly become an established starter, and went on to be named the best player at the 1987 World Youth Championships, as Yugoslavia triumphed.
Prosinecki’s four year stay at Red Star brought three league titles, a Yugoslav cup victory and the greatest triumph in their history: the 1991 European Cup.
In a side that also contained the likes of Darko Pancev, Dejan Savicevic, Vladimir Jugovic and Sinisa Mihajlovic, Red Star defeated Grasshoppers, Rangers, Dynamo Dresden, Bayern Munich and Marseille to win the trophy. Prosinecki scored the first penalty in a 5-3 shoot out victory.
The midfielder then moved on to a six year spell in Spain; first with Real Madrid, where he won the Copa del Rey, then Oviedo, Sevilla and Barcelona. He returned to Croatia with Dinamo and NK Hrvatski, before moving to Belgium with Standard Liege and then Portsmouth. On the English south coast he remains a hero, playing a pivotal part of the survival of the club in 2001/02. A brief spell in Slovenia was followed by a final year at NK Zagreb.
Prosinecki had a hugely successful international career, first with Yugoslavia and then with Croatia. He scored for the former in the 1990 World Cup, and repeated the feat eight years later for Croatia. In doing so he became the only player to have scored at the World Cup for two different countries. After 49 caps and ten goals for his country he retired in 2002.
Prosinecki is now manager of Red Star Belgrade.
