Jean-Philippe Durand made his name at Toulouse, after making his debut at the age of 20.

The midfielder helped le Tef to Ligue 1 promotion in 1981/82, before slowly becoming a force in the division. In 1986 he was a leading light for the side that finished fouth in the division, qualifying for the 1987 UEFA Cup.

Few gave the French side much of a chance when they were drawn against a Napoli side that starred the £6.9m talents of Diego Maradona. However, Toulouse took Napoli to penalties, and Durand was one of the men who scored decisive kicks to eliminate the Italians.

After his first International cap in a 2-1 victory against Spain in 1988, Durand moved to Bordeaux in 1989 and finished runners up to Marseille in the 1989/90 Ligue 1 title race. After two seasons at Girondins he was transferred to Marseille.

In 1992 Durand won the French league title, and represented his country in their ill fated European Championships campaign. A year later he would win the inaugural Champions League against AC Milan.

After Marseille were relegated for match fixing, Durand was one of a handful of players that opted to stay at the club and help them win promotion in 1995.

He received 26 caps for his country and now works in the backroom staff at Marseille.
