44 goals were scored over the weekend in the Dutch top league, which amounts to an average of almost five per game.
Only two of them were scored at De Kuip but Feyenoord fans were not complaining after an impressive display against PSV. Meanwhile, AZ were thrashed in Heerenveen, Twente demolished Utrecht and Ajax did what they had to do against Excelsior.
Feyenoord 2-0 PSV: An impressive Feyenoord showed class and determination against a lacklustre PSV. Sekou Cissé scored the opening goal four minutes before half-time. Ruben Schaken netted a second five minutes after the interval. This was an important win for Ronald Koeman and his men.
Not only do the Rotterdam side remain in the top-five, the outstanding display against the Eindhoven rivals also takes away some of the pain caused by last season’s 10-0 defeat by PSV in Eindhoven that has lingered on somehow. Despite the loss PSV stay in second place, three points behind AZ who have a game in hand.
Heerenveen 5-1 AZ: This was a clash between two teams who both had been unbeaten for eleven consecutive league games. AZ knew PSV had lost at De Kuip and they could extend their lead to six points. It was Heerenveen however who bagged the three points in impressive fashion. Bas Dost opened the scoring for the home side after less than fifteen minutes played.
Six minutes later Jozy Altidore equalised but Rajiv van La Parra put the Alkmaar side in the lead again. Three minutes into the second half the home side were 4-1 up thanks to goals by Filip Djuricic and Ramon Zomer. Luciano Narsingh added a fifth fifteen minutes before time. AZ remain league leaders and they can extend their lead to six points if they manage to beat Excelsior in Rotterdam tonight when they are playing the remaining 45 minutes of the match that was abandoned due to dense fog at 0-0. Heerenveen remain in sixth place.
FC Utrecht 2-6 Twente: Utrecht away is always a difficult fixture on paper but Twente had no problems whatsoever at the Galgenwaard. After 63 minutes the Enschede side were 5-0 up with the names of Peter Wisgerhof, Ola John (twice) and Willem Janssen (twice as well) added to the score sheet. Frank Demouge and Davy Bulthuis scored for the home side but any hopes of an unlikely comeback were dashed by Steven Berghuis’s goals seven minutes before time. Twente remain in third place and are catching up on both PSV and AZ. Utrecht drop to thirteenth place.
Ajax 4-1 Excelsior: Remarkably Ajax had not won a league game at home since August but when you are playing Excelsior at home you are expected to win, except when you are VVV, and that is what Ajax did. Jan Vertonghen scored twice in the first half. Vertonghen’s second was scored from a free-kick after Excelsior’s Samuel Scheimann was sent off for a horrendous tackle on Miralem Sulejmani.
Darren Maatsen scored for the away side in the dying minutes of the second half but it was not enough to cause Ajax any problems and Sulejmani and Nicolás Lodeiro netted in the second half. Ajax are still fourth in the table, Excelsior are second-bottom. Meanwhile Excelsior goalie Wesley de Ruiter received a one-game ban today for making an obscene gesture to the Ajax fans on Saturday.
Other results:
Vitesse 4-0 RKC Waalwijk: Another win for Vitesse who are in seventh place. RKC now find themselves in fourteenth place and, despite a promising start to the season, a relegation dogfight seems a likely prospect for the men from Waalwijk.
De Graafschap 1-2 Roda JC Kerkrade: Roda are now sitting ninth after a useful win at De Vijverberg. De Graafschap, in sixteenth place, are in trouble.
ADO Den Haag 3-0 NAC Breda: Two inconsistent sides met in The Hague and ADO came out on top. Both sides have 18 points, NAC are eleventh on goal difference.
Groningen 3-3 NEC: Melvin Platje salvaged a point for the visitors in injury time. Groningen remain eighth in the table, NEC are fifteenth.
Heracles Almelo 7-0 VVV-Venlo: This 7-0 thrashing of basement boys VVV was the biggest Eredivisie win in the history of the Almelo club. The home side are tenth now.
