The Bundesliga is approaching its winter holidays but all focus is still on the action with some exciting matches in Germany.

Gladbach and Dortmund slumped; Pizarro, Podolski and Huntelaar score again and Freiburg move bottom. Here’s the best of the action:

Hertha BSC 1-2 Schalke 04: The Royal Blues kept in touch with FC Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga thanks to goals from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Teemu Pukki.

Huntelaar opened the scoring on 20 minutes with his 14th goal in 15 games but Hertha’s Brazilian attacker Raffael equalised five minutes later. The young Finnish striker Pukki added the decisive goal, just a minute before half time.

Mainz 0-0 Hamburg SV: HSV remain unbeaten under Thorsten Fink after drawing 0-0 with improving Mainz. The hosts are four games unbeaten and are in action on Tuesday night against Cologne, whilst, Hamburg stay in 12th.

Hannover 96 0-0 Leverkusen: For the first time this season we had two 0-0 draws in one weekend with neither side taking the win at the AWD-Arena.

There were very little chances in this match but Hannover will be happy with a point after a poor run of form.

FC Nurnberg 0-2 Hoffenheim: Hoffenheim move in to ninth with a superb away victory over 10-man Nurnberg who had Timothy Chandler sent off in the first half.

It was clinical Bosnian striker Vedad Ibisevic who popped up with two excellent goals, either side of half time, to keep Dieter Hecking’s men locked in a fierce relegation dogfight.

Werder Bremen 4-1 Wolfsburg: Thomas Schaaf’s men stay in the hunt at the top of the table with a thrashing of Wolfsburg who are struggling under Felix Magath.

Greek defender Sokratis fired home the opener on 18 minutes before hitman Claudio Pizarro rattled home a superb solo-goal just after half time.

His strike partner Marcus Rosenborg had a very good game at the Weser with an assist and then a typical striker’s goal with a low drive past Benaglio. The enigmatic Austrian Marko Arnautovic added a fourth goal with a well-timed run and finish on 71 minutes.

Wolfsburg are now just two points off the relegation zone and they netted a late consolation through left-back Marcel Schafer.

FC Augsburg 1-0 Gladbach: In the surprise result of the weekend, Augsburg moved off the bottom spot with an excellent victory over title-chasers Gladbach.

Die Fohlen could have gone top of the Bundesliga with a victory but without Marco Reus, they didn’t even look like scoring against a stern Augsburg defence.

Six minutes after the interval, Augsburg took the lead through Callsen-Bracker’s deflected free-kick which flew past the helpless Ter Stegen.

FC Koln 4-0 Freiburg: It was a rotten day for Marcus Sorg’s Freiburg who dropped in to the bottom position after being handed a battering at the hands of Koln.

The Billy Goats went two goals ahead before the break through midfielder Christian Clemens and then striker Lukas Podolski added his customary two goals to take his tally to 14 for the season.

The hosts move into 10th place with eyes on a potential top-half finish this season under Stale Solbakken.

Borussia Dortmund 1-1 Kaiserslautern: Like Gladbach, Dortmund failed to take top spot in the Bundesliga after a stuttering display at the Westfalen.

Without Mario Gotze, Dortmund struggled to take control of the game against Kaiserslautern who currently remain in the relegation area.

Japanese midfielder Shinji Kagawa is finding form at Dortmund and he opened the scoring with a neat right-foot drive on 26 minutes.

But Olcay Sahan hit back on the hour mark with a superb left-foot volley from the edge of the penalty area.

VfB Stuttgart 1–2 FC Bayern: This Southern derby at the Mercedes-Benz Arena was always to going to provide plenty of entertainment and it certainly did.

After Mario Gomez missed an absolute sitter in the early stages, Stuttgart drove up the park and took the lead when Molinaro’s cross was knocked down by Harnik for the on-rushing Christian Gentner who fired home.

Their lead lasted less than 10 minutes when Rafinha’s cross from the right-hand side was bundled home by Gomez for his 15th goal of the campaign.

Stuttgart’s impressive left-back Molinaro was sent off for two bookable offences after a controversial incident involving Arjen Robben.

Gomez added his second of the afternoon and the clincher on 56 minutes with an easy finish from close range.

Good week for: FC Augsburg. Jos Luhukay’s men have endured a tough debut season in the Bundesliga having spent the majority of the campaign in bottom spot.

But Callsen-Bracker’s winning goal against Gladbach sparked celebrations amongst the coaching staff and the players who swapped positions with Freiburg in the table.

Bad week for: Felix Magath. According to the German media, Magath took his players to bowling in midweek to try and improve the morale of his out-of-form squad.

The pressure is already beginning to grow on the former Stuttgart, Bayern and Schalke coach and if things don’t pick up, he could find himself looking for another Bundesliga club.

Player of the week: Vedad Ibisevic (Hoffenheim). The Bosnian striker has been surplus to requirements this season under Holger Stanislawski with the Hoffenheim coach insisting on a more fluid style of play.

But after results didn’t go their way, Ibisevic found his way back into the team and he has shown some glimpses of the superb form in 09/10 where he had 18 goals in 17 games before being ruled out for the rest of the season.

Ibisevic took his tally to five goals in six starts for Hoffenheim on Saturday with two goals against Nurnberg.
