Carl Froch, Nottingham’s WBC super middleweight champion, is hoping his WBA counterpart Mikkel Kessler can make it a clean sweep for the Europeans in the Super Six World Boxing Classic as the Dane takes on American Andre Ward on Saturday.
Should Kessler defeat the unbeaten Ward, not only will he have made it a hat-trick for Europe’s fighters, following Froch’s victory over Andre Dirrell and Arthur Abraham’s knockout of Jermain Taylor, but it will also set up a unification bout with the Englishman in the next round.
“The Yank’s aren’t having the best of times so far,” said Froch. “I felt for Jermain Taylor getting stopped in the last round again against Abraham, it was like my fight with him all over again.
“As for Dirrell he was just far too negative against me. Maybe Ward can get them back into it but if he doesn’t then it will have been a disastrous start for the Americans.
“I suppose there is a little bit of an ‘us and them’ attitude with the American’s and the European’s but having said that my remaining two fights in the round robin stage of the tournament are against Kessler and Abraham so I’ll be focusing on them from now on.”
Froch is hoping that 'Viking Warrior' Kessler will emerge from his clash with Ward with his WBA title intact so both WBC and WBA titles will be on the line when they meet in the New Year.
“Our fight is already a massive fight but that would make it even bigger. I’m really looking forward to the Kessler fight because I know that’s exactly what it’s going to be – a fight. Dirrell didn’t come to fight and it made for a poor spectacle for the fans but you know when me and Kessler get in the ring there’s going to be fireworks.”
Froch maintained that he has a good relationship with Kessler following their promotional tour of the Super Six, but insisted when they step in the ring together he knows what needs to be done.
“I like Mikkel, he’s a good guy and we had a good laugh on the press tour but business is business and I know I have the power to KO anyone out there including Kessler.”
However Froch has a message of consolation for Kessler’s fans: “Even when I beat Mikkel I still expect him to bounce back and we will probably end up having a rematch in the final.
“He just needs to make sure he doesn’t slip up this weekend against Ward or otherwise he could be fighting for his survival in the competition against me.”
