Floyd Mayweather Jr has signed to fight Shane Mosley on May 1 in a bout which pits two of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters in the world against each other.
Mosley signed the contract earlier in the week, putting the ball firmly in the court of Team Mayweather. However, on Wednesday ‘Pretty Boy Floyd’ ended the anticipation and put pen to paper to fight ‘Sugar’ Shane.
"Everything's good to go, it'll be a great fight, and the world will see what a great fighter Shane is at 147 pounds," Mosley's attorney Judd Burstein told The Los Angeles Times.
The bout is expected to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will see two of the top three welterweights in contemporary boxing (lets not forget Pacquiao) battle it out.
Mosley, the WBA super world welterweight champion, has been chasing a fight with the unbeaten Mayweather for years and challenged him on live TV following Mayweather’s victory over Juan Manuel Marquez.
The fight seemed a natural outcome for both fighters when their prior fights failed to materialise for drastically different reasons.
Mayweather’s bout with Manny Pacquiao was called off after the Filipino superstar failed to submit to Mayweather’s demands for random blood tests.
Tentatively scheduled for March 13, the bout was expected to be the most lucrative fight in boxing history. However, following the collapse of the bout Mayweather was left without an opponent.
Shortly after, Andre Berto was forced to pull out of his bout with Mosley following the Haitian earthquake. Berto, a native of the country, lost several family members in the disaster and was unable to fight at such a traumatic time.
The two boxers without opponents will now face each other in a fight that has the potential to be one of the most memorable in recent times.
