Amir Khan, the WBA light welterweight champion, could face mandatory challenger Marcos Maidana in December according to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer.
Khan successfully defended his title against Paulie Malignaggi at Madison Square Garden in May, but has yet to find an opponent for a winter showdown.
Khan’s next fight has been tentatively scheduled for December 11, but it is still to be decided whether he will fight in the UK or stateside.
Schaefer, who ruled out a fight with lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez, confirmed that the hard-hitting Argentinean Maidana is top of the list of potential opponents.
Maidana, 28-1 (27 KOs), is the WBA interim champion, but must first overcome DeMarcus Corley on Saturday if he is to have a chance of fighting for the full title.
"I just talked to the Khans and we'll see if we can put together a fight with [interim titlist Marcos] Maidana," Schaefer told ESPN.
He added: "If Maidana wins, we will see if we can put that together for December 11.
"I don't know yet if it would be in the UK or the US. The Khans are checking with Sky and I will be talking to HBO to see what makes the most sense."
