Marcos Maidana has hit out at Amir Khan and trainer Freddie Roach as he chases a fight with WBA light welterweight champion. The Argentinean knockout artists is the current interim-champion but is desperate to step into the ring with Khan and win the full title.
Maidana must first overcome former WBO light welterweight champion DeMarcus Corley on Saturday if he has any hope of a showdown with the British boxer, but he is already frustrated that a fight with Khan has yet to materialise.
Khan’s trainer Roach is confident that his charge would handle Maidana with ease, and has said as much in interviews, but Maidana feels Team Khan are avoiding a fight with the mandatory challenger for the title.
"Such people are hypocrites,” said Maidana, 28-1, (27 KOs). “It looks as if you had a language for the cameras and another for the promoter.
“Everyone knows that a year before Khan was afraid to fight…This is a message to Roach and Khan: Stop lying to the boxing fans.
“I have no problem, even going to England to fight him and knock him out. And bring the other half of the WBA belt to Argentina for it belongs to me.”
The 27-year-old may be on the right path to a shot at Khan after Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said a match-up between the two was on course for December.
Maidana will have to impress against the 36-year-old veteran Corley if he is to secure his long awaited fight with Khan and his willingness to travel to England will certain help his bid.
