Naseem Hamed, former world featherweight champion, has returned to boxing this time as manager of Scotland’s Commonwealth Games gold medallist Callum Johnson. The 25-year-old Johnson will make his professional debut on the undercard of Ricky Burns’ world title defence on December 4 at Braehead and Naz has called on the whole of Scotland to get behind his man, who he believes will become a world champion.

“I’m buzzing as much as he is with regards to getting his career started. I’m there for him to advise as a manager and I’m looking forward to seeing him progress and winning a world title. I know one hundred percent within my heart that he’s got the ability, the determination and the discipline,” said Hamed, who is waiting on confirmation of his managerial license.

Hamed believes his new charge can win his first 10 fights by knockout and predicts a spectacular show from Johnson on his debut next month.

“I think there’s going to be a sensational knockout on [December 4] from Callum, knowing how good he punches. I think the whole Scottish public over here should back a fighter who won a gold medal for Scotland.”

Johnson, meanwhile, is grateful to be making his debut on such a high-profile bout when Burns puts his WBO super-featherweight title on the lines against Andreas Evensen in what should be another explosive encounter.

“I was there when Ricky won the title in the Kelvin Hall and what a night that was,” said Johnson speaking of Burns’ hard-fought victory over Roman Martinez to win the world title.

“To be making my debut on the undercard is just unbelievable and I’m going to be so proud in doing that. Thanks to Ricky for allowing me to box on his undercard and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Burns added: “The fight is only a couple of weeks away. The card was looking good, but now its looking even better that Callum’s been added to it. I’m sure he’s going to go out there and put in the performances he gave at the Commonwealth Games.”
