David Haye has announced that a showdown with Wladimir Klitschko will take place this summer. The WBA heavyweight champion used Twitter to confirm the unification clash with the IBF and WBO champion.

Haye said this morning on Twitter: “Its on.... officially!!! June 25 or July 2 - Haye (me) the WBA champ Vs Klitschko the IBF & WBO champ battle it out for World No.1 Spot.”

The highly anticipated clash had been on again and off again over the past few years but talks held recently proved successful despite several factors acting against it.

Klitschko was set to face Englishman Derek Chisroa on April 30, rescheduled from December after Klitschko pulled out with an abdominal injury. However, it emerged on Saturday that the Germany based Ukrainian had withdrew from that bout leaving him free for a summer fight.

The meeting of the two is one boxing fans have been waiting on for a long time and aside from a Manny Pacquiao v Floyd Mayweather event is the biggest fight that could have been made in the sport.

Haye v Klitschko will be a lucrative fight for all involved and promises to be an explosive match-up for the lacklustre heavyweight division which has been void of serious challengers to the Klitschko’s throne.

Wladimir Klitschko’s brother Vitali is the reigning WBC heavyweight champion and should Haye emerge successful against the younger Klitschko he will be gunning for big brother Vitali.

Haye has made his intention clear to retire by the end of this year. In order to secure his legacy in the sport he must seize the opportunity to fight for each world championship strap and succeed.
