Boxing legend Joe Frazier, the former undisputed world heavyweight and Olympic champion, died on Monday night from liver cancer at the age of 67.
STV’s boxing correspondent, Graeme Bradley, travelled to Philadelphia in 2010 to meet Frazier and reflect on a career in which he was an undisputed world heavyweight icon.
Frazier famously defeated Muhammad Ali in the “fight of the century” in 1971, before going on to lose twice to his one-time friend in 1974 and then in the “Thriller in Manila” a year later.
Despite those two defeats, Frazier believed that ultimately, in time, he had won all three fights against Muhammad Ali.
In a three-part interview, Frazier also stated he would have had little problem taking on the likes of Mike Tyson and Rocky Marciano, and also reflected on his battles with, and his respect for, George Foreman.
Aside from boxing, Frazier’s other passion was singing and even toured with his band, Smokin’ Joe and the Knockouts.
Paul Anka, who wrote My Way for Frank Sinatra, even reworked the song for Frazier in 1971 and the boxer was happy to indulge with a rendition for STV.
