Ricky Burns could make the first defence of his WBO interim lightweight title against Anthony Crolla, STV has learned.
Burns, who defeated Michael Katsidis in November to win the belt, is scheduled to fight at Braehead Arena near Glasgow on March 10, 2012.
Crolla is the current British lightweight champion, having won on points against Scot Willie Limond in Motherwell at the end of November.
Burns had hoped to paired with current WBA, WBO and The Ring champion Juan Manuel Marquez, who recently lost against Manny Pacquiao in his shot at the WBO welterweight title by majority decision.
The Coatbridge boxer stepped up to lightweight from super featherweight to fight Katsidis in his last bout and says, at the age of 28, his intention is to keep on fighting for as long as possible.
“I want to have a hundred fights,” he said earlier in December. “That's how much I love boxing. I've always said I'll never, ever leave it and as long as I'm not getting hurt then I'll keep fighting into my late 30s, definitely."
