Cesare Prandelli wants Mario Balotelli to learn from Italy’s 4-0 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2012 final and use it to his advantage in the future.
The Azzurri were swept aside by the all-conquering Spaniards in Kiev, with David Silva, Jordi Alba, Fernando Torres and Juan Mata all on target to reclaim the European Championship trophy.
Balotelli went into the game looking to build upon a star showing in the semi-final win over Germany but was left disappointed, leading to him leaving the pitch at the final whistle before eventually returning to collect his runners-up medal.
"I told Mario that these are experiences you have to deal with and have to accept," said Prandelli.
"You have to hold your hands up and say the opponents were better, accept defeat.
"But you also have to make sure this helps you going forward and you can grow from the experience.
"This has happened to a number of players, and will happen again, but this is what sport is all about."
Italy dominated possession in the first half of the match, as Spain struggled to press their expansive style to great effect, but were punished by direct play from their opponents.
Their chances were further dented when Thiago Motta was forced from the field on the hour mark with an injury, leaving them to play out the rest of the match with only ten men, with Prandelli having already used his three substitutes.
"We've had a terrific European Championship and the only regret is the fact we didn't have a few extra days to rest up before this game," said the manager.
