Netherlands 0-1 Denmark: Michael Krohn-Dehli upsets the odds for Danes

Denmark upset the odds to see off an underwhelming Netherlands side 1-0 in their opening Euro 2012 group match.

A first-half strike from Michael Krohn-Dehli against the run of play won all three points for the Danes, who survived wave after wave of Dutch attack throughout the 90 minutes.

Arjen Robben hit the post ten minutes from the interval after a misplaced pass from goalkeeper Stephan Andersen, but the Bayern Munich winger was one of a number of players culpable for passing up numerous chances to score.

Denmark also survived two handball shouts, one in either half, but the Netherlands only had themselves to blame for failing to convert their domination into a win.

The Dutch had 27 clear shots on goal, only five of which were on target, with countless chances from outside the area failing to trouble Andersen in the Danish goal.

Krohn-Dehli's strike also exposed frailties at the back for the Netherlands, with the Brondby midfielder skipping past Mark van Bommel with ease to find a gaping hole down the left inside the area.

Having burst clear, the 29-year-old opened his body before firing in a low left-footed shot through the legs of Maarten Stekelenburg to score the only goal of the game with 24 minutes on the clock.

The Netherlands continued to press, with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar also being introduced to try and improve their fortunes in front of goal, but he failed to seriously trouble Andersen bar a solitary one-on-one effort which was blocked at the striker's feet.
