Tim Clancy said he had made a “very hard decision” to leave Motherwell this summer.
The Irish defender departs Fir Park after rejecting the offer of a two year deal to stay with Stuart McCall’s men.
Speaking on the club’s official website, Clancy said: “It was a very hard decision for me to leave as I loved my time at the club so much.
“I have read online that I have been quoted as saying that any move away would be a ‘step up’. I said nothing of the sort and have no idea where it came from.
“I have too much respect for the club, the manager and the fans for that.
“I want to thank everyone for making me feel so welcome and I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for the boys when they embark on their European run in July.”
Clancy joined the Lanarkshire side in August on a free transfer from Kilmarnock and became a rock in defence as Well booked a place in the Champions League qualifiers by finishing third.
Stuart McCall said the Steelmen would now pursue a new option in defence.
He said: “Tim was keen to stress how much he enjoyed his time at Fir Park in what was probably one of the best seasons of his career.
“Obviously we are a little disappointed that we won’t have him about the place next season but I respect his decision.”
