Laurent Blanc has stepped down from his role as French coach after their quarter-final exit to Spain.

The former Manchester United and Barcelona defender has been in charge of Les Blues since 2010, and has been credited with rejuvenating the side after a tumultuous World Cup.

Blanc led France to a 24-match unbeaten run in the build up to the Euro 2012 tournament, before being beaten 2-0 by Sweden in the final Group D match, and then by the same scoreline by Spain in the quarter-finals.

The 1998 World Cup winner met with officials on Thursday to discuss his future with FFF president Noel Le Graet.

According to L'Equipe, Blanc asked for 48 hours to discuss his future with his backroom staff, including former international team-mate Alain Boghossian.

After the discussions the decision was taken not to proceed with the national team. The report suggests that Blanc was disappointed by a perceived lack of support from the FFF after media criticism of the French performance.
