Hibernian manager John Hughes will lead his boyhood heroes out for the first time at Easter Road when they face Preston on Saturday, but the new boss is pacing himself for the succession of Premiership competition in the remaining pre-season friendlies.

Following the game against Preston, Hibs will travel south to face Blackburn and Bolton as Hughes refines his squad for the start of the new season.

“I don’t want to peak too early. We’ve got a big week in front of us obviously starting with Preston tomorrow then we’re down playing a couple of English premiership clubs, Blackburn rovers and Bolton.

“It’s a big test for us, it’s the best league in the world and I’d like to think I’ve got players that have got ambition to play in the English premiership.”

In addition to the team’s performance on the park, Hughes is hoping the experience of playing in front of large crowds will come in handy when they face the two Glasgow giants in the SPL.

“When we go down there I’m not wanting shrinking violets. We’ve got places to go to like Ibrox and Parkhead in front of 60-65,000 people and I want guys to play with a pride and a passion for Hibernian. So these are big character test for us as well, we’re looking forward to it.”

Regardless of the results Hughes maintained he wants to play football the way Hibs’ fans want to see it played and he should know.

“I’m Leith born and bred and I’ve supported the club all my days so it’s a big day for me.

“I know what the fans want. I think the Hibs supporters are a bunch of supporters that know how football should be played and I hope I can do that tomorrow no matter of the result.”
