Hull sign Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink

Former Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink has signed a two-year deal with Hull City.

The free agent underwent a medical yesterday before completing the move this morning.

The Dutch international joins Phil Brown at the KC Stadium in a move which should go some way to appeasing Hull fans who are still fuming at the sale of their top player Michael Turner to Sunderland.

Vennegoor of Hesselink was released by Celtic in July as his three-year contract came to an end. He had featured in almost all of Gordon Strachan’s teams in the latter half of last season, but was deemed surplus to requirements by new manager Tony Mowbray.

The 30-year-old had since been training with Dutch side FC Twente as speculation grew around his destination. Blackburn Rovers, Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin and French side St Etienne had all expressed interest in his services.

The 6’3” player arrived in Glasgow in 2006 on a £3.4million, three year deal, fresh from winning three titles with PSV Eindhoven. His high profile transfer heaped huge pressure on him to perform, but he initially struggled to provide the goals to match the expectation.

He went on to win two league titles, a Scottish Cup and a Scottish League Cup.
