Former Livingston, Dundee United and Aberdeen boss Paul Hegarty will be named as Steven Pressley's replacement in the Scotland coaching staff on Thursday.
Manager George Burley - who survived the chop after a disappointing 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign - will name his squad for Scotland's friendly trip to Japan on the same day.
Hegarty was involved in the Scotland setup early in the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign, scouting Iceland for Burley, before he left for an ill-fated spell at Livingston.
The 55-year-old former Dundee United boss spent most of his playing career at Tannadice, during which time he won eight Scotland caps.
Gary McAllister ruled himself out of the running for the role this week, stating that he would prefer a full-time management role.
The 57-time capped former midfielder was approached by Burley to take up the role vacated by Falkirk coach Pressley, but decided to reject the offer amid reports he is set to take on a managerial job in England.
Rumours had been circulating that either John Collins or Maurice Malpas would be invited to become Burley's second assistant in the Scotland dugout alongside current assistant Terry Butcher.
Malpas is Butcher's assistant at Inverness Caledonian Thistle and would have proved a logical - if not universally popular - choice for the position.
Hegarty had a successful playing career at Dundee United, leading them to their first ever major trophy in 1979, the Scottish League Cup.
His management career has taken him to Forfar Athletic, Aberdeen, Dundee United and Livingston and he recently threw his hat into the ring for the vacant Greenock Morton job.
He has also fulfilled roles as a coach at the latter three clubs he managed, as well as Hearts.
