Rangers striker Kris Boyd could be out for a month after fracturing his eye socket in a bizarre nose-blowing incident on Monday.
Boyd was substituted in the first half of his side’s 2-1 Old Firm derby win over Celtic at the weekend after a clash of heads with midfielder Landry N’Guemo.
His injury wasn’t thought to be serious, but upon blowing his nose at an SFA coaching course, he was rushed to hospital, where tests showed a possible fracture.
With fellow forward Kenny Miller suffering from a long-standing hamstring problem, the loss of Boyd will be a create a selection headache for Rangers boss Walter Smith, despite his star man’s recent form being below-par.
It’s the second major blow for the player this week, after it was revealed that he will need to take a big wage cut to stay at Ibrox beyond his present contract, which runs out at the end of this season.
Despite being the second top scorer of all-time in the SPL – having scored over 100 goals since his arrival from Kilmarnock in 2006 – Boyd already earns less than fellow strikers Miller and Kyle Lafferty and may cut his losses.
He turned down a chance to move to Birmingham in January and more recently turned down a reported £50,000 a week move to Turkish side Trabzonspor.
Boyd joins fellow Ibrox crock Kirk Broadfoot in the bizarre injury alumni. Broadfoot suffered burns when an egg exploded in his face in May, narrowly avoiding blinding him.
Also in the list is England ‘keeper David James, who pulled a muscle in his back reaching for a remote control, leaving him out for several weeks. Also, fellow goalie Santiago Canizares missed out on a place in Spain’s 2002 World Cup squad when he shattered a bottle of aftershave in a sink, with a piece of the broken glass falling and severing a tendon in his big toe.
