Andrew Driver opts for back seat in Scotland decision

Andrew Driver has insisted that he’ll take a back seat in the debate over whether he'll play for Scotland. The Hearts winger benefited from the rule change which means he could represent Scotland although he’s English.

Now Driver insists he'll wait for an invite before making a decision on which country to represent.

The Scotland manager George Burley had insisted that Driver would have to make his interest known before he would be considered, and SFA chief executive Gordon Smith reiterated that they would want to confirm his interest.

But Driver's agent Scott Fisher, speaking to BBC Scotland, said that his the 21-year-old  would keep a low profile until asked to do otherwise.

"If he's ever asked to represent Scotland, then he'll have a decision to make,” said Fisher. "Until then, he just wants to concentrate on fitness so that he can regain the form he showed last season."

Driver was capped by Stuart Pearce for England U21s but since then has been overlooked by England and it’s highly unlikely that he’ll be recalled to join them in South Africa 2010.

But because the Oldham born player moved to Scotland when he was 10 and was schooled here for more than five years , he is now eligible to play for the national side thanks the SFA-led home countries rule change.

Burley suggested he himself would make a decision when it was required, and indicated that he would expect the player to indicate his interest.

“If he wants to play for Scotland I’m sure he’ll be in contact,” said Burley. "And he does have my number; I was at Hearts after all.”

The decision, if Driver is asked to make it is a big one, would open up the possibility of an international career with one country and close it with another. For a promising player with ambition the decision will not be taken lightly.

Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo commented on the club website: "This decision can only come from the player himself; nobody can make it for him. I cannot really give him any advice about this. It is a private matter for Andrew Driver."
