Gordon Strachan will attempt to persuade Celtic coach Neil Lennon to quit Parkhead and move to the Riverside when, as expected, he’s unveiled as Middlesborough’s new boss this afternoon.
According to a report in The Scottish Daily Express the former Celtic, Coventry and Southampton boss wants former Hoops midfielder Lenny to join his backroom staff
The move comes after Gareth Southgate was fired on Tuesday night just 20 minutes after holding a post-match press conference following a 2-0 win over Derby County, which left his side lying fourth in the Championship just one point off leaders West Brom.
It’s understood Lennon who worked with Strachan both as a player and a coach would jump at the chance to team up again with his old gaffer and former Celtic assistant Garry Pendrey.
Strachan is said to have turned down an approach from Boro to take charge a couple of weeks ago, but has since had a change of heart.
Other names in the frame for the job included Terry Venables and Alan Curbishley as well as Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws.
But Chairman Steve Gibson believes the former Hoops boss is the right man to get the Riverside team back into the Premiership at the first time of asking.
Former Boro striker Noel Whelan who played alongside Strachan and under him at Coventry welcomed the appointment . He said: "I think Gordon will be a hell of a manager for Boro."
"He always gets the best out of his players."
