With Celtic legend Henrik Larsson due to retire on November 1, we’re taking a look back through the STV archive to bring you footage of some of the key moments from his time in Scotland.

Larsson’s arrival was seen as a coup for the Parkhead club, but few could have predicted the impact the Swede would go on to have during his time in the east end of Glasgow, as he scored 242 goals in 315 appearances.

The two men who brokered the deal for the player to make the move from Feyenoord in 1997 – Fergus McCann and Jock Brown – were both naturally optimistic after securing the signature of the striker.

Ex-chairman McCann said of his £650,000 signing: “We’re very pleased indeed. As soon as Wim Jansen came to Celtic, he had a few players in mind already that he felt he wanted to bring in and top of that list was Henrik Larsson.

“He is a guy that the fans will be impressed by. He’s got tremendous skills and he’s got great personality as well. I think he will be an exciting player to watch.”

Brown was the club’s chief executive at the time of the Larsson signing and predicted that the player would have a big future in the Hoops, saying that he would be a hit with fans of both sexes.

“This is a big name but it is a big name with a big future. We are looking at a young man who is 25 years old, who already has 27 caps in a very good Swedish international team and he is coming to do his stuff here in Glasgow.

“He has something to prove and a hunger and appetite and a desire. When you speak to him it comes right through the eyes, he wants to do well. He wants to make a big impact here.

“He will certainly be deemed to be a real personality about the place. I am sure he will be a big favourite of supporters – both male and female.”

Larsson played his way into Celtic’s record books with a memorable seven year spell in Glasgow. He helped his club to win the Scottish Premier League four times and added to those accolades with two wins apiece in the Scottish League Cup and Scottish Cup.

His goals also played a huge part in Martin O’Neill’s side’s march to the 2002/03 UEFA Cup final, scoring two goals in the final against Porto in a game which Celtic lost 3-2 after extra time.

He left the club for Barcelona in 2004, where he won the Champions League, before returning to his homeland. A brief spell at Manchester United on loan also followed in 2007, where he picked up an English Premier League winners medal.

Henrik Larsson to retire on November 1
