Motherwell v Hearts: Laszlo downbeat; Gannon credits change in game plan

Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo admits he's disappointed with the way his Jambos side went about their business in their 1-0 defeat to Motherwell while 'Well boss Jim Gannon pleased with tactics switch.

Motherwell v Hearts: Laszlo downbeat; Gannon credits change in game plan

Laszlo pointed to three reasons for his team's failure on the day after Motherwell ran out 1-0 winners: lack of confidence; lack of experience and the lack of midweek Co-op Cup hero captain Michael Stewart who netted the penalty winner against Celtic but sat out the 'Well game through injury.

"If you win at Celtic Park you must have more confidence," Laszlo said. "But we had some poor performances. Also, if experienced players like Michael Stewart are not there, then the team feels this.

"If you can play powerful and good football with ten men why can't you do it before? You know why? The experience is not there. This is what makes me angry."

The Hearts gaffer hooked full-back Craig Thomson after Yassin Moutaouakil's deep cross evaded him before Forbes struck in the 55th minute.

"Craig Thomson is a huge talent but it's a learning process this season," Laszlo said. "I'm not angry about this goal but if you have more experience you can avoid it."

Motherwell went into the match having conceded six goals in back-to-back games with St Mirren and 'Well boss Jim Gannon was relieved to see his side steady the ship in a win that sees them go fourth in the SPL and credited a change in tactics for the win.

Ross Forbes who netted the winner was recalled to midfield with captain Stephen Craigan dropped following the 3-0 midweek Co-Op Cup defeat to St Mirren with John Sutton part of a two pronged central strike force that allowed central midfielders Giles Coke and Forbes to go forward.

"Giles has got much more to offer than I was allowing him," Gannon said of the watch minner.

"We were playing this Milan formation where our three midfielders were more in the construction phase and allowing other people to attack.

"We talked about that inhibiting Ross and Giles' natural inclination to join the attack.

"Today we took the reins off a little bit and allowed them to go and join and got a better performance from Giles, and Ross was able to get in an area where he can use his undoubted talents."

He  added: "What pleased me is that everybody made a significant contribution.

"John Sutton came in and did really well and led the line. We changed the game plan a little bit. I think our players have shown in the last few games that they can play good football.

"But they have been caught up in playing all the time. They need to learn when and where to play, and when to hurt teams by getting it in quicker. Today we mixed it up quite well."

BANG!!! That was Hearts coming back down to earth after stealing the game on Wednesday when they should have been thrashed out of sight. This typifies what the win on Wednesday was all about. Hearts came out winners against Celtic in a game that should have seen them get their biggest hiding in recent years. Celtic were so superior but couldn't buy a goal. The result of that fake win? Hearts thought they were the better team and went to play Motherwell and got spanked.
