Rangers fans clash with police in Romania

Police and stewards used batons and spray as they clashed with Rangers supporters in the Steaua Stadium during the Champions League match against Unirea Urziceni in Romania.

A handful of the estimated 2,000 travelling fans were seen throwing seats and surging forward to confront the security at the 27,500 capacity stadium.

Television cameras showed police and security using their batons and discharging what appeared to be pepper spray to repel the fans.

Speaking after the match, Andy Kerr, president of the Rangers Supporters Assembly, said that there had earlier been trouble outside the ground as fans tried to gain entry to the ground.

Of the incidents during the game, he commented: “I’ve been told there was pressure at the front [of the crowd]. Spray was used, which was used before the match.

“The last time we had similar problems was in Artmedia Bratislava. They always seem surprised that we all turn up at the same time to try to get in.

“This is the Champions League. It’s supposed to be the best stadiums in the world. This ain’t the best stadium in the world.”

He added: “In the big scheme of things this is a minor incident.”

why is it that Rangers fans always end up in this position?

    They always blame someone else.

Scotlands shame and I hope Uefa act quickly.

    I was there.

This report is actually untrue. There were no police in the stadium.

There was a troupe of stewards, however, who were extremely confrontantional, removing flags and banners, and then pepper spraying fans who tried to retrieve their property.

After the fans had eventually reclaimed their property, and the stewards had left the fans' enclosure, peace and quiet returned.

It should be noted that many fans who had travelled 2000 miles to get to the game, were denied entry because of grossly inefficient stewarding and entry procedures.

There was one entry gate (and one exit gate), which must present a serious health and safety issue. There were no toilet or refreshment facilities, of any description, provided.

The Bucharest Police officer dealing with the entry process, offered the following opinion to fans who had queued for the bet part of two hours: 'I don't care. You should have come earlier. This is Romania, and nothing works here'.
