St Johnstone starlet Murray Davidson has talked down rumours that he is in line for a surprise call-up to George Burley's Scotland squad to face Wales on November 14.
Burley names his squad for the trip to Cardiff on Thursday and former Livingston midfielder Davidson, 21, has been hotly tipped to make the step up from First Division football to the international stage in the space of 12 months.
Scotland assistant Paul Hegarty, who had Davidson on his books at Livi during his stint as manager, was in the stands at McDiarmid Park last weekend and saw the combative player head in St Johnstone's decisive goal in a 3-1 win over Falkirk.
An unassuming Davidson though talked down his chances of battling it out with the likes of Darren Fletcher and Scott Brown for a central midfield berth, saying that his main focus is holding down his place in the SPL new boys' squad.
"I'm just going about my business at St Johnstone, trying to establish myself as a first team regular. Anything else is a bonus," he told STV on Wednesday. "There are a lot of good players on the bench just now that I am keeping out of the team, so if I don't focus 100% on playing well, they will take my place.
"I know Paul Hegarty was at the game on Saturday but I was told he was looking at some of Falkirk's players. I've heard that he's gone back to George Burley with a report about me and that's great. I got on well with Paul when we were at Livingston together and it's nice to know he was watching me play, but I'm focused on St Johnstone."
After exclusion from Billy Stark's U21 squad for their Euro qualifier with Azerbaijan next weekend - in which Davidson's former Livingston team-mate Leigh Griffiths was named - admirers of the East Lothian-based player have stepped up their calls for the talented youngster to be given recognition by the Scotland setup. But the player says that whilst he isn't tired of talk about his potential international credentials, playing for Scotland isn't on his mind.
"If I get called up to the Scotland team it would be brilliant and I would be absolutely delighted. But I haven't heard anything to say that it's going to happen," he said.
"Everybody keeps asking me about playing for the U21s and now the full team but I'm not thinking about it. It doesn't put any pressure on me because I am only concentrating on my bread and butter, which is club football.
"It is my ambition - it is every player's ambition - to play for Scotland and it would be a massive honour. But I am just taking things as they come and hope that someday in the future I might be considered, but not right now.
"As I keep saying to everyone who has asked me about Scotland, I am only focused on staying in the St Johnstone team. We have a game against Aberdeen on Saturday and I am only looking forward to that."
