Walter Smith watched Rangers snatch a draw from the jaws of victory against Unirea Urziceni last night then admitted their chances of Champions League qualification are slipping further away.
Lee McCulloch had struck on 78 minutes to give Rangers a not undeserved lead. They had battled hard to keep themselves in the game against the ebullient home side, but had their hopes of a win shattered when a Marius Onofras wonder strike levelled the score 10 minutes later.
Smith said: “We played very well tonight and after getting in the lead in the manner we did do and then to give it up so late in the game was very disappointing.
"When you are winning so late in the game you should make it more awkward for the opposition to score a goal and we didn’t do that."
He summed up: “It meant effectively, after getting ourselves back into the section in terms of qualification, we have made it even more difficult for us by giving away a bad goal in the last few minutes.”
Rangers stay anchored to the bottom of group G behind Sevilla, Stuttgart and Unirea, but are still in the chase for the second qualification spot.
However, with a final match against the runaway group leaders in Seville they are more likely to be fighting for third spot and a trip into the Europa League.
Rangers next match is against Stuttgart at Ibrox on November 24.
