Rangers youngster Danny Wilson stepped out onto the sodden turf of the Steaua Stadium in Bucharest with the weight of Champions League expectation on his 17-year-old shoulders. Ninety minutes later he walked off with a solid reputation as a potential mainstay of the Ibrox defence.
The youngster was called in to partner veteran Davie Weir for the huge match against Unirea Urziceni in the absence of Madjid Bougherra.
It was a huge ask of the youngster in sodden conditions as part of a shaky defence but he proved to be an integral part of the squad, once again earning special praise from his delighted manger Walter Smith.
“I’m pleased with the way he has handled the situation since coming into the team,” said Smith.
“It’s his third game and for a boy of 17 it speaks volumes for him that he has managed to handle it so well.”
Wilson’s assured and, when required, physical performance helped Rangers keep a clean sheet for most of the match.
When the equalising goal finally came it was Weir who was marking Marius Onofras, but even his experience couldn’t prevent the screamer from sailing past Allan McGregor into the Rangers goal.
Wilson has made three appearances for Rangers. He debuted against Dundee in the Scottish Cup before starting in the abandoned Dundee United SPL match last weekend.
