Celtic greeted with No Surrender banner in Hamburg

Celtic fans outraged at greeting from German fans

Celtic greeted with No Surrender banner in Hamburg

Hamburg supporters had a surprise welcome inside the HSH Nordbank Arena ahead of their Europa League tie with Celtic. When the two teams emerged onto the pitch, fans behind the goal unveiled a huge display of a giant Union Jack with a banner unfurled underneath which read "No Surrender".

The 4,000 strong Celtic travelling support were stunned to find the old taunt at a foreign ground. They can after all get Union Flags from the rivals at home - though this was much more provocative than would be allowed in Scotland

With Uefa having dished out one improper conduct charge this week, the governing body will take an interest in what was obviously a carefully planned and well-organised show involving more than a thousand Hamburg supporters.

The phrase 'No Surrender' originates from the Siege of Derry, part of the fighting which led to the catholic King James II being ousted from power by his protestant daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange.

Rival fans always seek to wind up the opposition and in many cases it is seen as fair game around Europe. The memories of the infamous Celtic v Rapid Vienna games in the 1980s were quickly brought to the surface when the two sides were drawn in the same group in this year's Europa League.

But the European footballing authorities will be concerned that such a specific taunt, based on historical religious affiliations, has surfaced in this way at a showpiece occasion.

Fans of Hamburg's local rivals St Pauli were believed to be in the Celtic end of the ground as well. Hamburg fans were seen wearing Rangers shirts and scarves when they visited Glasgow two weeks ago.

Celtic fans are "outraged" yet their own support spent the entire night singing pro terrorist songs?

Please Mr STV SHow some balance. I have a family member that died at the hands of terrorist and yet people who are singing the support of them scream of outrage at a banner.

Maybe UEFA should be more concerned with the vermin amongst the Celtic support who polluted the atmosphere with their constant chants in support the I.R.A?

cbeebies clearly has the IQ of a piece of plankton but maybe he/she might agree that the poisonous chants from the Celtic supporters in praise of child murdering terrorists might be more likely to lead to "hate crimes"?

Gallop, is there a village missing an idiot just now, cretin?

You mention the Daily Record (a comic fitting for a simpleton such as yourself actually) - Keith Jackson's report on the trouble in Romania was THE most exaggerated, hysterical, sensationalist piece of fiction you will ever come across! You mentioned Jim Traynor - this would be the same Traynor who said that the Rangers fans in Pamplona probably deserved a beating from the police because of the songs some sang?

The facts (not something Celtic fans are usually fond of mind you) are that a complicit Scottish media continually exaggerate and sensationalise any minor incidents involving Rangers fans while sweeping under the carpet any misdemeanours involving their Celtic counterparts.

So maybe its time you crawled back into your sewer and stop spouting your barely legible nonsense?

I heard it mentioned once when a guest (from one of the broadsheets) with Jim Delahunt told him at that time 15 had been murdered and delahunts jaw dropped in disbelief but it's true and can be proved by the police. What the british did to Hamburg in 1943 a lot of people would describe as a war crime. It just goes to show that hatred transcends all, because the only thing that the gers and Hamburg fans have in common is hatred, they both believe they are supreme amongst men, and that all should follow their word, i.e. fascists.

I doubt the rankers fans will see the irony in wearing their poppies

I would imagine Rob McLean and Terry Butcher never mentioned the trouble because their program is for football highlights.

If you think the trouble hasn't received coverage in the media then you are clearly even more delusional than I first thought. My argument is that the level of coverage has been disproportionate to the incident and that this is usually the case where Rangers are concerned.

However, if you and Bigbhoy think that one football highlights show not mentioning any trouble proves an overwhelming bias in the Scottish media then I think that shows the level of your intellect. I don't think we'll be seeing either of you on Mastermind any time soon, thats for sure.

So what if people want a united Ireland or an independent Scotland they are free to want what they like, that’s what happens in a free democratic world ye fascist.

Clowns like you who hijack the poppy for their own ends are exactly what puts people of wearing one.

And a senior policeman at the Celtic end was heard telling a Celtic fan who had been attacked on London Road that he knew there were a lot of Glaswegians in with the Hamburg fans but there was nothing they could do about it.The No Surrender message last night never really bothered me, and I know a lot of Hamburg fans who are actually anti fascist and who would have been cringing at their own supports stupidity last night.

Big deal, a Giant Union Jack was displayed, hardly a crime? Glasgow Celtic fans like to fly the Irish Tri-Colour....a foreign flag in Scotland and again big deal. The NO SURRENDER Banner was also displayed, again big deal, it's not an oppressive slogan as some make out, it's taken from the Siege Of Derry when 'The Apprentice Boys' were defending themselves from aggressors. The term 'NO SURRENDER' has been and is used in modern times to signify Loyalty the Union and in some cases a defiant chant to militant republicans and those that support them that they cant bomb or shoot them out of Northern Ireland. The chanting of Tiocfaidh ár lá would be deemed as more threatening language as well as up the ra. Any chanting of Terrorist filth whether its Republican or Loyalist is disgusting, THe real shame of Scotland is the fans on both sides, it's pathetic just like the Scottish Premiership.
