Had Hibs managed to secure a victory at Tynecastle on Saturday they would have gone joint top with Celtic in the SPL table for at least 24 hours with the Hoops not due to take on Falkirk until Sunday afternoon.
But Hughes, who had to make do without the injured Sol Bamba and Merouane Zemmama, admitted he was happy to settle for a share of the spoils.
"I'll take a point with the way we played, said Hughes. "Not to be at your best and to come here and take a point, I think it shows good signs.
"I felt Hearts were the better side in the first half, but not with any great football. We defended it very well.Second half, I felt we were a little bit better."
Hughes singled out central defence pairing for Ian Murray and Chris Hogg for special praise calling their first half performance ''immense.'
But he was less generous towards Hibs centre forward Colin Nish and didn't shake the striker's hand at full-time.
"He worked his corners, worked away," said Hughes. "What I'm really looking for is a big 6ft 2in (player) not to be on his backside all the time."
One striker who had good cause to be warming his backside was substitute Derek Riordan who started on the bench after a injuring his foot in a freak accident involving his dog.
But Yogi waved away any concerns that the young striker who came on early in the second half would miss out on joining up with the Scotland squad for the friendly against Wales next week declaring: "He should be okay. He's really keen to go with Scotland."
