Andy Dorman makes history with Wales call-up

Andy Dorman has been called up for Wales ahead of their friendly with Scotland. The St Mirren midfielder becomes the first player to be named in a senior international squad under new rules introduced recently.

The schools rule means that any British passport holder can play for any home nations side, providing they have been educated for a minimum of five years in that country.

Dorman will now face his St Mirren goalkeeper Paul Gallacher, who was called up for George Burley’s Scotland after Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon broke his arm at the weekend.

The 27-year-old could also have been called up for England. He was born there to English parents before moving to Wales.

He also spent seven years in America, which led him to consider taking up American citizenship in order to see international action.

Since joining St Mirren in January 2008 Dorman has been an influential figure at the club. He won player of the month for February 2009 and ended the season as the club’s joint top goal scorer.

Wales manager John Toshack has called up three other players for the Scotland match. Cardiff City’s Adam Matthews earns his debut cap while Robert Earnshaw (Nottingham Forest) and Joe Allen (Swansea) are both recalled.

The new call-ups fill in for late call offs Craig Bellamy, Simon Davies and James Collins. Bellamy and Collins are both out through groin injury while Davies has a foot problem.
