One of Scotland's most famous derbies returned on Tuesday when Dundee United and near neighbours Dundee clashed in a fundraising friendly.

The sides have not met in competitive action since 2005, when Dundee were relegated from the SPL to Division One.

So there was an edge in the atmosphere at Tannadice ahead of Tuesday night's clash.

But by the time 90 minutes was up, the Arabs had run out 3-1 winners in the highly anticipated derby match.

Members of the Black Watch were guests of honour at the friendly encounter which attracted nearly 8000 supporters.

United striker Jon Daly got on the score sheet in his first game since his return from a potentially career threatening knee injury.

Andis Shala opened the scoring for United, before Pat Clarke levelled.

Danny Cadamarteri put the home side ahead again on 66 minutes before Daly sealed the victory in his first appearance since a horrific cruciate ligament injury sustained in April.

The match was arranged to mark the official unveiling of United's new floodlight system and raise money for both sides' youth set-ups.

Both sets of fans could resume competitive rivalries next season, with Dundee targeting promotion back to the big league at the end of this season.

They currently lie second in the First Division - trailing league leaders Queen of the South on goal difference.
