SFA board member admits support for Levein

An SFA board member has told STV of his support for Dundee United manager Craig Levein as the process of finding a replacement for George Burley gets under way. The Scotland job was vacant as of yesterday morning when the board unanimously concluded that Burley was no longer the man for the job.

Now the SFA must find their fifth manager in as many years, and the pressure is on to find the right man to haul Scotland out of their decline.

Craig Levein and Walter Smith have emerged as the front runners for the job, and the top SFA source admitted that he would give the Dundee United man his support.

“I'll be lobbying for Craig Levein,” he admitted. “He's got a hardness and he'd certainly command respect in the dressing room.

“I know he has ambitions to manage in England in the future, but I don't see this as a drawback.”

Tempting Levein to the Scotland job may mean building bridges in light of his long running feud with the SFA.

The 45-year-old manager has also built a solid reputation at Tyneside and enjoys a strong relationship with boss Stephen Thompson.

The Tannadice chairman commented yesterday: "I would refuse permission for talks to take place because I've no desire to see Craig leave. I want to see my country do well but I want the best employees to stay at my club."
