Algerian and Rangers defender Madjid Bougherra won a place in the World Cup finals then blasted “Egypt, 'Shut up!”. Bougherra was speaking after the dramatic three World Cup qualifiers against Egypt which were surrounded with controversy.
When the two great rivals met in the Egyptian leg of the play-off in Cairo, the trip was marred by violence against the visiting team. Bougherra said: “We received a very bad reception; we were victims of fans throwing missiles before the match.
“Several players were injured in the attack. The Cairo game was not player in an atmosphere of fair play. We would never have lost in Cairo if these attacks hadn’t happened. I’m sharing an intense joy with the Algerian people.”
Algeria won through the ties thanks to a solitary goal in the third tie, played at a neutral venue in Sudan.
Afterwards, Bougherra said: "I am very happy because we have found justice in the world. We played, we won and we just say to 'Egypt, 'Shut up!'"
FIFA have opened up disciplinary proceedings against the Egyptian FA over the trouble in Cairo.
A statement from the international governing body said: “According to the official reports there were incidents affecting the Algerian team on its way from he airport to the hotel.
“Consequently, disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the Egyptian Football Association. The Disciplinary Committee will decide on the case.”
