Andy Murray put down his racket to turn his hand to predict the outcome of the big football competitions this season. The Hibs fan was asked about his team’s chances of the Edinburgh club ended the Old Firm’s dominance in the SPL this season, as well as the likely winners of the English Premier League and the 2010 World Cup.
John Hughes’ Hibernian are sitting level on points with second placed Rangers in the SPL table with 13 games gone and are just two behind leaders Celtic. With both Glasgow clubs struggling for form in the league in recent weeks, Murray believes that it is the Hibees’ best chance in years to split the two.
“I would probably say there is a low chance but they have a lot more chance this year than in previous years,” said Murray. “Rangers and Celtic have been struggling.”
Murray’s English club is said to be Wolverhampton Wanderers but Mick McCarthy’s men are finding life in the English Premier League difficult and Murray was sharp with his answer of who he thought would win the crown this season. “Chelsea” was his quickfire response to end Manchester United’s reign as champions.
Determining the winner of the forthcoming World Cup was a more difficult prospect for him to consider and he finally plumped for a South American team to emerge victorious in South Africa.
“Brazil looked good against England, so I’d say Brazil have got a pretty good chance,” said Murray.
Back to tennis, Murray is set to return to Miami and resume a full training programme over the Christmas period with the hope that the hard work will pay off and make 2010 the year he adds the elusive grand slam title to his name.
2009 was a landmark year for the Dunblane-born player, who reached number two in the world and won several ATP tournaments, without picking up that elusive Grand Slam victory.
