The Football Years to return for a second series

Which year: viewers get to choose which years to follow in second series

The Football Years, STV's smash hit series focusing on the great moments in Scottish football history, will be returning for a second series. And STV wants to know which years you want to focus on.

In series one, The Football Years explored events taking place in 1967, 2003, 1979, 1998, 1971/2 and 1982. Narrated by Peter Capaldi, it has proved hugely popular with fans, with last week’s episode on 1971/72 attracting an average audience share of 21% and 430,000 viewers – beating every other channel and outperforming the network.

Scottish football fans are now being asked to come forward and tell STV their favourite years, with a view to the best ideas, stories, memories and suggestions being explored in series two. And this time, the second series will also be available  online.

Whether it’s Albert Kidd’s hand in snatching the 1986 Premier Division away from Hearts into the hands of Celtic at Dens Park; the 1997/98 season where Rangers dominance was ended, Negri scored 31 before Christmas and Larsson moved in; the highs and then lows, very lows of the ’78 World Cup; the 1991 Scottish Cup final thriller between Motherwell and Dundee United… whatever your greatest memories are, The Football Years want to hear them.

Suggestions, along with reasons for picking those years, can be added to the comments below or e-mailed directly to the producer at thefootballyears@stv.tv.

Series one of the programme featured interviews with all the people that mattered from each era - Jim McLean, Alex McLeish, Bobby Brown, Sir Alex Ferguson, Billy McNeill, John Greig, Willie Miller, Graeme Souness and Barry Ferguson to name but a few.

Brendan O’Hara, producer for The Football Years said: “The series is a mix of great storytelling, nostalgia and social history. That, coupled with the nation’s love of football, makes for compelling programming, and I’m thrilled we’re going into production with a second series.”

Elizabeth Partyka, Channel Controller for STV, said: “The Football Years has been a great success for STV.  It is performing well in its slot up against some tough competition and is delivering new audiences for STV which is crucial in this multi-channel digital age.  We’re delighted to be offering viewers another series, and to give them the opportunity to help shape the content.”

The next episode of The Football Years goes out at 9pm on Thursday February 11 and features 1982 – Viva Espana: The best Scottish team never to win the World Cup. How did the greatest national team ever assembled fail to qualify for the knock-out stages of the ‘82 World Cup?

It's got to be 1982-83 - the "Tayside Treble"; Dundee United, St Johnstone and Brechin City corner the league titles.

And of course Aberdeen won a wee trophy in Europe. In fact it could foreseeably not feature the Old Firm in any way, which would be a novelty (although no doubt there'd be scope for a Celtic hard luck story as usual).

How about 92-93? The year Rangers almost did the quadruple (and may well have done so if Marseille hadn't been lining the pockets of everyone they met en route).

Of course it'll probably be billed as the year that Celtic poached Frank McAvennie from under the noses of Partick Thistle.

Dundee Football Clubs season 1962 champions of Scotland and a semi final of the European cup, what a team that was.

Definitely Scotland's 1974 World Cup campaign. The best Scotland team ever - Bremner, Lorimer, Hay, McGrain, Jardine, Jordan and the rest. Great times. When will we see your like again?
