Glenn Loovens has said he still believes Celtic can take the SPL title and says he thinks someone will be on the end of a hammering from Tony Mowbray’s new look forward line. The defender was responding to Rangers striker Kenny Miller’s claim that Kris Boyd’s return meant the Ibrox club boasted a bigger goal threat.

Celtic have struggled to convert superior possession into goals on several occasions this season but Tony Mowbray acted decisively in January to create a new-look front line. Scott McDonald left the club to join Middlesbrough but Morten Rasmussen, Diomansy Kamara and Spurs star Robbie Keane all signed on at Parkhead.

Loovens said that he believed Celtic would score plenty between now and the end of the season, citing the number of opportunities the new strikers would have to bang in the necessary goals.

“I think if you see our previous games and how many chances we created then I don’t really agree with that,” he said. “We’ve got some great strikers.

“It’s just waiting for that one game when everything falls and clicks together. Like I said, we keep creating many chances and I’m sure that, if we keep creating them, one day they will all go in.”

Though Robbie Keane has dominated the headlines, many observers have noted the contribution of Danish striker Morten Rasmussen, who already has two goals to his name in Celtic colours. Loovens explained that the ex-Brondby ace brought something different to the team.

“He’s a different type of player,” Loovens acknowledged. “He’s got a nose for the ball and he’s always in the penalty box, which you need to be to score goals.

“We didn’t score many scrappy goals but he scored on the other day and he’s got a feeling for that and I think that was one that we missed a bit.”

With extra firepower added in the transfer window, the centre-half said he felt the SPL title was still a possibility. Celtic trail rivals Rangers by 10 points but the Dutchman said there was still enough time to close the gap.

“Of course, there’s still 15 or 16 games to play so that’s a lot of points,” he insisted. “We still have to play them twice so I can’t see why not. We need to get a run and make sure we don’t drop points.”
