Who would you choose in Scotland's greatest football team?

STV's new series, Scotland's Greatest Team, will give football fans the chance to end the age old debate of who would make an all-time Scotland XI.

It's the oldest pub debate in football. When two or three fans are gathered together, talk will always turn to who would be in the starting 11 for the greatest Scotland team of all-time? Would any of the current crop earn a place in your line-up. Would the stars of yesteryear dominate? And who would be your dream manager to lead your fantasy XI out into battle?

Now, STV, with the help of The Scottish Sun newspaper, want to bring the debate into the open and determine, once and for all, who exactly the nation would want to wear the starting jersey in their new programme, Scotland’s Greatest Team.

Starting on Thursday March 18 at 9pm, STV’s brand new series will bring together a host of authorities on the subject, including Graeme Souness, Maurice Johnston, Archie Gemmill, Billy McNeill, Craig Levein, Terry Butcher and Lawrie Reilly to name but a few, to debate who is worthy of having their name pinned up on the board in a world-beating Scotland team.

The final decision rests with you, the viewer, with football fans nationwide invited to vote weekly from a shortlist, narrowed down to players who have been capped by Scotland between January 1 1967 and the present day, for each position. The series host, Tony Roper, will then reveal who the public have chosen in a special reveal show on April 22.

Week on week, guest presenters Sanjeev Kohli, Lorraine Kelly, Kelly Dalglish and John Gordon Sinclair will profile the contenders for a place in the 4-4-2 formation. Respectively, they will build from the front, taking a look in order at Scotland’s top strikers, midfielders, defenders and then goalkeepers and managers in the fourth week.

After each show, STV viewers will be able to visit the show’s website, stv.tv/greatestteam, and choose who they would want in their line-up, saving their choices week-on-week until they have built up a team. Voting will remain open and viewers can change their team selection anytime before midnight on Thursday April 15.

The nominees in each programme were selected by an independent judging panel, chaired by current SFA chief executive Gordon Smith. The panel consisted of former Scotland international David Hay, Kilmarnock manager Jimmy Calderwood, writer and broadcaster Archie Macpherson, author William McIlvanney, the Scottish Sun's head of sport, Iain King and Richard McBrearty, curator of the Scottish Football Museum.

Lorraine Kelly, who will present the case for the 10 midfielders vying for the four positions in the team, said she would also be chipping in with her own vote and would be pressing for some of the legendary players from her beloved Dundee United to make the cut.

“I’m a big football fan so I jumped at the chance to get involved with this new series and I’ll definitely be going online to add my vote,” said Lorraine. “This is every football fan’s opportunity to pick Scotland’s greatest ever football team, I just hope some Dundee United players make the final cut!”

Series producer Brendan O’Hara, who also produced recent STV success The Football Years, is looking forward to seeing the varied choices football fans will make in their team choices. “This isn’t a popularity contest and we’re not asking viewers who were the best eleven players,” he said. “Rather we want viewers to use their football knowledge to pick the eleven players in a 4-4-2 formation that they believe would combine to make up the best Scotland team, as well as the manager that they believe would best harness that enormous talent.  I can’t wait to see the result.”

Elizabeth Partyka, STV’s channel controller, added: “Scotland is a nation of football fans and following the enormous success of our hit series, The Football Years, we know there is an appetite for programming of this kind.  I’m sure we’ll spark a bit of debate around the final cut and we very much hope that viewers across the country will watch and participate as we seek to build Scotland’s Greatest Team.”

Lots of great forwards to choose from, Jordan, Dalgleish, Gilzean and Law are my favourites.

The final two must be Dalgleish and Law with Gilzean just being sqeezed out but what a great player Gilzean was.

how come lawrie reilly, possibly scotland's best ever centre forward, not get a nomination for the striker's position on this show? law, gilzean, jordan okay, but reily has a better scoring record than them all--second only to hughie gallagher, who, of course, also went unmentioned. i fear for the make up of this team, with no doubt "legends" such as gary caldwell, frank haffey, matt elliot being featured. regards, john allan.

    Hibbyboy,

I have sympathy over your view on Laurie Reilly, though surely Dalglish is the best ever post war Scottish player?

Overall though, while I enjoyed the first programme, it showed many flaws. For example, we have fantastic strikers like Brian McClair, who seen it, done it, and bought the T-Shirt at the highest level, but was largely ignored by Scotland (and booed by the fans whe he did play). He was at least the equal of McCoist and Johnston, and McCoist was a total failure in the English top flight into the bargain. McClair was the first player since George Best to score over 20 goals in a season for Man Utd - says it all really. The guy was treated abysmally by Scotland and it is totally shameful.

Lawrie Reilly's not there because they're only covering players capped since 1967.

I see your point about Brian McClair and agree he was at least as good - maybe better - than both Mo Johnston and Ally McCoist, but I still wouldn't class any of the three of them at the level of Dalglish, Law and Gilzean. If anything, I'd say an on-form Charlie Nicholas in his early matches for Scotland was maybe 4th in talent over the past 40 odd years.

    Great idea for a programme and sure to be plenty of debates. Agree with the Charlie Nicholas points.Of that era of striker i would have him, in terms of talent, above Johnston,McAvennie, McClair and McCoist in that order. Anyway my team will prob be;

    Gordon, McGrain,McQueen,Miller,F Gray; J Johnstone,Souness,Strachan,D Cooper; Dalglish,Law; Subs; Goram,Narey(can cover all back 4 so edges McCleish, Gough,Hansen etc),Baxter,J Robertson(Notts Forest) and Jordan

I will lose all faith in the scottish public if goram ends up in the greatest team. He has never played at a world cup, not even half the caps of Leighton, spat his dummy out when he got dropped by Brown and to top it all off - He is English!

Looking through the names on everyone's teams, it's heartbreaking how many great players we used to have, yet achieved comparatively little with them. Our managers often drove me nuts at World Cups: playing people out of position, dropping giants, including players at the very last minute who shouldn't have been there (Allan Evans in 1982, for instance, or Alan McInally in 1990), never settling on a system to stick with, etc, etc.

I'd argue that Dalglish often didn't perform precisely because he was playing alongside Joe Jordan, or equally inappropriate striking partners - Steve Archibald, Andy Gray, etc - and if he were paied up beside someone just as good as him like Law, we'd have a truly world class fron two.

IF YOU'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT A PLAYER LIKE DALGLISH AT LEAST SPELL HIS NAME PROPERLY,AND THE ONLY REASON HE (ALLEGEDLY)DIDNT SHOW HIS LIVERPOOL FORM FOR SCOTLAND WAS BECAUSE NONE OF THE OTHER SCOTLAND PLAYERS WERE ON HIS WAVELENGTH

Quite right, Dunk. Whenever Dalglish partnered someone clever and skilful up front - Mo Johnson, Charlie Nicholas, even Frank McAvennie, the goals came as did the great play.

It seems everyone's going for Davie Cooper and Jimmy Johnstone in their midfields, but I'm not sure they'd have worked that well together in the same team. It would have been great when we were going forward, but I'm not sure how that midfield would cope with other teams coming at them - neither player was what you'd call a good tackler, for instance.

This is a great idea, but why start from 1967? The majority of our greats like Dave Mackay, John White, Willie Woodburn, George Young, Sammy Cox, Eric Caldow, Bobby Evans, Bobby Collins, Lawrie Reilly and more played before that. Reading some of the posted selections I'm amazed that Baxter has been left out of so many, unlike some others like Dalglish, Jimmy Johnstone and Alan Hansen, he always turned it on when he wore a Scotland jersey.

Can't believe that Asa Hartford never got a nomination for midfield, he was one of scotlands' most capped players (50)such a hard working player who was so underrated, probably because he never played for one of the more 'glamourous' clubs but he definately deserved a mention.
