Rangers will find out in two weeks if potential new owners are to make an offer for the club. The group considering a possible takeover, RFC Holdings (Guernsey) have entered a period of due diligence where they will examine the club and its financial situation in more detail before confirming their intended offer.
Fronted by former Queens Park Rangers director Andrew Ellis, the group began talks with Rangers on Monday after the club released a statement confirming major stakeholder David Murray was considering selling all or part of his 92 per cent share in the Ibrox side.
The Scottish champions are currently £31 million in debt and have been operating to a business plan in conjunction with the Lloyds Banking Group, who have put pressure on the club to reduce costs.
An independent committee of Rangers directors will consider the implications the offer could have for the club and will comprise of chairman Alastair Johnston, John McClelland, Martin Bain, Donald McIntyre and former Ibrox captain John Greig.
The club said in a statement regarding the committee: “The Independent Directors will ensure that any possible offer for RFC is assessed on the merits for RFC, its shareholders and all other stakeholders in RFC including supporters.
“It is particularly important to the Independent Directors that any possible offeror is able to demonstrate the capacity and commitment to provide a stable and sustainable future for RFC and the Independent Directors will want to understand fully the plans of any potential offeror in order to recommend the action that shareholders should take.”
Rangers are reportedly valued at £33 million but have been unable to bring new players in to their side since August 2008, while manager Walter Smith and his backroom staff have been working without contracts since January in a bid to ease the financial pressure on the club.
The Ibrox club are on the verge of their second successive SPL title, currently enjoying a 13-point lead over second-placed Celtic.
