Madjid Bougherra and Kirk Broadfoot have been confirmed as absentees from this Sunday’s Co-operative Insurance Cup final. The Rangers defensive pair are both currently sidelined with hamstring injuries and will miss the match with St Mirren at Hampden.
Broadfoot suffered his injury in training a week ago and missed the 3-3 Scottish Cup draw with Dundee United at Ibrox last Sunday as a result. He had been working hard to be fit to face his former club but has lost his battle to make the final.
Bougherra has been absent from Walter Smith’s squad since their 1-0 win over Celtic on February 28 and has missed Rangers’ last three matches, including Algeria’s 3-0 friendly defeat to Serbia shortly after the Old Firm clash.
Danny Wilson looks set to taste his first action in a senior cup final, again lining up alongside veteran David Weir at the heart of the Rangers defence.
The duo have formed a solid partnership when called upon to play together, with Wilson ready to make his 19th appearance of the season.
Together, Weir and Wilson have let in 15 goals in 18 games, with six coming in two 3-3 draws with Hamilton and Dundee United, whilst keeping eight clean sheets.
It is expected that number two goalkeeper Neil Alexander will line up behind the central defensive pairing for the final at the expense of Allan McGregor, having started each game in the competition so far.
Rangers are aiming to win their 26th Scottish League Cup crown and reclaim the trophy, having lost 2-0 to Celtic in the 2009 final. Sunday’s match will represent their 33 appearance in the final, having lost the final on just seven occasions.
