Alexander ponders his Rangers future

Neil Alexander has revealed his frustration at being a bit-part player for Rangers after picking up his fifth medal in Sunday’s 1-0 win over St Mirren in the Co-operative Insurance Cup. The number two goalie, who joined from Ipswich Town in 2008, however isn’t ruling out extending his stay with the SPL leaders beyond the end of his current contract.

Alexander, 32, made just his sixth appearance of the season in the cup final and kept his fourth clean sheet as Rangers pulled off a victory against the odds in the Hampden final.

Allan McGregor remains manager Walter Smith’s first choice in goal and Alexander admits that getting a taste for first team action in the big games has left him pondering his future.

“Obviously it is tough not playing week in, week out,” Alexander said. “But I love it here and my family are very settled here.

“We will just have to wait and see what the future brings. Obviously I want to play and it is frustrating and at times it does get really tough.”

Alexander, who has three Scotland caps, was Rangers keeper for their Uefa Cup final appearance in 2008 but since then has played just 24 times.

His contract expires at the end of the 2010/11 season and, although he will consider where his future lies, he says he would rather stay at Ibrox and try to force his way into the team.

"I am delighted to play in a big game and I got an opportunity to show the fans and the manager that I am still capable of doing a job here,” he said. “Hopefully I will be here for a few years to come.

"I've got a year left on my contract and I love it here. It’s a great bunch of lads and it's great to be involved.

“Playing in big games and cup finals is what it is all about. I've played in four or five cup finals here and it gives you a taste to win more and more.”
