Celtic and Rangers legends clash in Glasgow’s George Square

Former stars of both sides of the Old Firm squared up to each other one more time in George Square in the centre of Glasgow. However, far from causing trouble, the legends and cult-heroes played a seven-a-side game of football for a new TV adverts for shirt sponsors Tennent’s.

Press and fans gathered side by side for the match that included street cones and jumpers for goalposts; between which were Andy Goram and Stuart Kerr.

The main attraction however were former Rangers captain Lorenzo Amoruso and Celtic striker Pierre van Hooijdonk, who netted 44 times for the Hoops in the Scottish league. The 40-year-old’s better days may be behind him however after failing to score in the kick-about.

The kick off time of 1.25pm reflected Tennent’s own 125th anniversary and the gathering crowd were treated to great football, many laughs and a dramatic end when ‘referee’ Willie Young ran off with the match ball!

The players were pleased to be pulling on their old clubs’ colours once again. Past Rangers Legend, Amoruso, was delighted to be back in Glasgow despite the 1-1 draw:

“When I was asked to take part in today’s event by Tennent’s I was sold, it was great fun and great to see the guys again. Just a shame we didn’t get a win like we used to!”

Former Celtic Star, Pierre van Hooijdonk, was equally pleased to be back:

“I always love coming back to Glasgow and to help promote the new sponsorship of Celtic is a pleasure. It helps signify a new start for the club. A new manager, a new team and a new sponsor, it is the fresh start that the club needs.”

Completing the team for Celtic were Tommy Boyd, Andy Walker, Tosh McKinley, Chic Charnley and Bobby Peta, whose neat touches received regular cheers from the crowd.

The Rangers seven, in addition to Amoruso and Goram, featured Gordon Durie, Gary McSwegan, Dave McPherson, Duncan Ferguson and Fraser Wishart.
