Dundee United hopeful Johnny Russell could face Celtic at Hampden

Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara is hopeful forward Johnny Russell could be fit for the club’s Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic next month.

The forward was forced off in the first half of the game with Inverness CT last midweek, after Josh Meekings' strong challenge.

Russell missed the derby match with Dundee in the Scottish Cup on Sunday and, following an X-ray on Monday, says he has sustained a fracture.

The injury was expected to rule the Scotland Under-21 international out for the remainder of the campaign but McNamara says he may return to action quicker than expected.

He told STV: “I think it’s a minimum of four weeks we are looking at. It’s disappointing for us and for Johnny because he’s been in great form for us.

“Hopefully he’s still got an outside chance of making the semi-final.

“He was devastated yesterday over the news and it is not great timing for both of us but we’ve just got to get on with it.”

The 22-year-old has scored 20 goals in 35 appearances for the Tannadice side this season.
