Scotland recorded their first victory over England in more than 30 years of trying at the Cyprus Women's Cup football tournament on Friday. The Scots, assisted by their strike force of Kim Little and Jennifer Beattie, thoroughly deserved their 2-0 win in Nicosia.

Little, the Aberdonian who was earning her 50th cap, broke the deadlock in the 25th minute, latching on to a neat back heel from her Arsenal team mate, Beattie, and firing home her shot.

Then, once the Scots had withstood a counter-offensive from their rivals, Beattie leapt to head the second after 53 minutes.

It would be nice to think that, as the sister of Scotland rugby number eight, Johnnie, and daughter of former British Lion, John, she won't be the only Beattie to enjoy success against England this month.

The Scottish coach, Anna Signeul, was thrilled by the fashion in which her striking duo operated together, especially given that the team were missing their record scorer, Julie Fleeting.

"I think that Kim and Jennifer were brilliant for us up front,” said Signeul. “They found each other so well and Jennifer is such a good target player for us.

“In terms of attack, we had a game plan and stuck to it. The whole midfield played well and the defence was impressive again.

“They never stopped working and we got this result because of the way we performed against a top side.”

Next up, the Scots meet Italy in Larnaca on Monday.
