St Mirren manager Danny Lennon has maintained his team are making progress after holding third place Motherwell to a goalless draw in Paisley.

The hosts controlled the first half but were left with nothing to show for it as Stuart McCall’s men came back into the match after the break.

However Lennon believes his team would have lost this kind of game last season and believes picking up a point showed their strength of character.

He said: "We came out of the traps well. We put Motherwell under pressure and could have been a bit more ruthless in front of goal.

"Motherwell are a good side and caused a lot of problems in the second half, but we showed a great sense of character.

"We showed determination and an unbreakable mentality. Last season, those games slipped away from us, so it was pleasing to take something.

"I'm satisfied at the performance. We managed to grind out a result in the second half and could maybe even have stolen it.

"There are five teams battling for the last top-six position and we feel we are making progress.

"That was our 11th clean sheet of the season, which is more than double what we got last year."

The former Cowdenbeath man reserved special praise for goalkeeper Craig Samson who denied Michael Higdon and Henrik Ojamaa.

Lennon added: "Craig was top drawer. Paul Mathers our goalkeeping coach has worked hard with him and his performances have been excellent."
