Craig Levein has sympathy for all affected by Rangers’ plight

Craig Levein has expressed his concern for administration-hit Rangers but said that Ibrox goalkeeper Allan McGregor will still be able to give his best for Scotland.

The national team manager named his squad for the friendly against Slovenia on Monday morning and McGregor was the only Rangers player in his selection.

Levein said that he did not take outside factors into account when calling up the goalkeeper but said that it was a testing time for all involved at Ibrox.

“It's extremely difficult for everyone involved at Rangers,” the manager said.

“I've chosen my squad based on form and the guys who have done a good job for Scotland in the past.

“I have to disregard outside influences where possible, although I do have a great deal of sympathy for the players, the management staff and the supporters of Rangers.”

Asked if the possibility of liquidation, or of some players losing their jobs as a result of administration was a worry, levein played down the impact on the national team.

“It would worry the Rangers players, the management staff and supporters more than anybody,” he said.

“But I don't want to pre-empt what would happen. It's very difficult for me to look into a crystal ball and tell you that players will be leaving Rangers, I've no idea about that.

“Allan McGregor is in the squad based on the fact that he's our best goalkeeper at this moment in time. I'm certain that Allan will be able to put aside the problems at Rangers when he's pulling on the jersey for Scotland.”
