Vintage video: Silky Gers defy conditions to sink Celtic

Rangers defied the dire conditions during this January 1975 match to play some attractive football, consigning their Glasgow rivals Celtic to a resounding defeat.

The Light Blues got off the mark after just five minutes following a header from Rangers strike legend Derek Johnstone.

Tommy McLean made a run down the right before cutting inside to send a cross deep to the back post. The ball was met by Johnstone who powered his header down past Hoops keeper Ally Hunter.

The Ibrox side added to their lead just minutes after the break following a sublime through ball from Alex McDonald. The accuracy of the pass was all the more impressive taking into account the minefield of divots the ball had to travel through.

His pass was collected by McLean, who cut inside a Celtic defender before tucking away a low shot past Hunter.

Rangers secured the points mid-way through the second half with a move almost identical to Johnstone’s opener.

The goal started with a mazy run from Ian McDougall, who then played the ball out to the right for McLean. The winger crossed to the back post, where this time Derek Parlane was waiting. He was to make no mistake as he put away the header to seal a crushing victory.

The end of the season would see Rangers wrap up the league, but Celtic collected both the Scottish and League Cups.
