Celtic were already powering to the 1987-88 Scottish Premier Division title before this 2-1 win over Old Firm rivals Rangers at Ibrox.
The Parkhead side hadn’t won the title since 1981 as competition from Dundee United and Aberdeen had briefly challenged the west coast league domination.
Paul McStay broke the deadlock after a goalless first half. The midfielder sent a cross deep into the box before latching onto a knock-down to fire a shot past the helpless Rangers keeper Chris Woods.
An equaliser from Danish international Jan Bartram brought the Gers back into the match after Celtic failed to clear from a Derek Ferguson corner.
Bartram found time on the edge of the box to line up a shot with his weaker right foot which cut through the packed box and past the airborne Bonnar.
With 12 minutes to go, it was Andy Walker who inadvertently came to the Celts rescue after an Anton Rogan header deflected off his chest into the goal.
Walker’s 26th goal of the season won the match for a Celtic side who had already beaten their rivals twice en route to a league and cup double.
It was a fitting celebration for Celtic in their Centenary year, but it was to be new manager Billy McNeil’s only league win as the Celtic boss. The next season saw Rangers embark on their record equalling nine-in-a-row run.
