Motherwell manager Mark McGhee is hoping that Cillian Sheridan can go some way to filling the void left by striker Chris Porter.
Sheridan joined the Well on loan from Celtic this week following the exit of their top scorer to English Championship side Derby.
“We hope he can stay in the team, that he can contribute and fill at least part of the gap that Chris Porter has left,” said McGhee.
“Physically he’s got a good stature. He’s got everything it takes to be a footballer at this level and you know we’re looking for height all the time and he’s got that.”
The 19-year-old Irish striker will be pushing to earn a place on Saturday’s team sheet when the Fir Park come up against fellow SPL side St Mirren in the Scottish Cup.
McGhee told stv that he is certain the youngster can make huge improvements to his game while at the club and return to the Hoops a better player.
“The contract I have with Celtic is that they give me a player that they think has got potential and I undertake to work really hard with them from now until the end of the season,” he said. “I intend so send him back a much better player than he arrived.”
Another addition to McGhee’s squad during the Janaury transfer window was Birmingham City's German under-20 midfielder Semih Aydilek.
“He came as a recommendation from Alex McLeish and Roy Aitken,” said McGhee. “He’s a young player with a good pedigree, left-winger, tall lad.”
He added: “Alex McLeish and Birmingham have given us a good deal on the boy we’re not paying his full salary. But in return we’re giving him a bit of experience. So the boy will benefit and we’ll see how much we’ll benefit when we get to know the boy.”
